Technology Post

Serving two purposes at once, this photo not only was made with the flickr mashup Bubblr, but it also includes the week's required technology post (which is in front of the elephant. - grin). You can click on the picture to better read the caption.

I am often fairly slow to adopt new technology. It took me a long time to switch from cassette tapes to music CDs. We just bought a DVD player in the last few years.

I guess it is always easier for those younger than us to be comfortable with technological progress. I remember growing up with the astronauts already on the moon and my older relatives marveling about the concept while it seemed very matter of fact to me because that was all I ever knew. My daughter, Hannah, is very comfortable with technology and she makes me feel quite overwhelmed sometimes as she does amazing things with my cel phone that I still can't figure out. I only learned how to instant message online very recently and I still don't know how to do it with my cel phone.

I have been very excited about this Library 2.0 project. Much of it is very new to me. Richard shared in his blog about one of his first experiences with Library 2.0 at the 2007 Ontario Library Association Conference. Approximately half of the conference workshops directly related to the "Web 2.0" theme. I felt very lost and quite intimidated. Yet in the demonstrations, the presenters (librarians) were incredibly comfortable with the topics. They made everything easier to grasp.

I began to realize that many of the concepts could and should have an immediate impact on my role as a learning facilitator with the Library's Adult Learning Centre. The adult students at the centre deserve to be able to discover and use these applications. Many employers will expect that their empoyees can demonstrate some facility with these new and emerging skills. And maybe... just maybe... there are ways that the Web 2.0 applications can be used to improve our services.

And I realized that there is much for me to learn at the library!
